About “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)”
Tomlin was asked to create a new treatment of John Newton's 1779 hymn for the 2006 film Amazing Grace, which tells the story of abolitionist William Wilberforce. He said he was completely floored to be asked, of all people, to add to one of the most sacred and recognized hymns of all time. Working with his pastor and longtime collaborator Louie Giglio, he wrote a new chorus about being set free, shaped by reading about Newton's past in the slave trade. The recording appeared on his 2006 album See the Morning and on the film's soundtrack.
