Pat Sczebel, a Sovereign Grace songwriter and worship leader, wrote the song in 2003 as a sung thanksgiving for the cross, dwelling on Christ bearing God's wrath in the sinner's place and turning enemies into sons and daughters. The recording that carried it into churches was captured live on February 25 and 26, 2005 at Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with Sczebel leading, and released that October on Sovereign Grace Music's Worship God Live.
